WebSummary On February 3rd, Jim asks his pregnant wife to do the shopping before nightfall. He takes a heavy couch and blocks his wife's entrance to the house. Then, he enters the kitchen, turns on the oven and asphyxiates himself with its emissions. Upon his wife's return, she asks a neighbor to help her get the door open. WebMcDermott is a master at weaving together storylines into a cohesive whole. She succeeds at making the characters three dimensional, real and completely relatable. The narration was excellent. The book was set in early 1900s Brooklyn and tells the story of a nursing order of Roman Catholic nuns and the Irish community they served.
